Emmanuel Macron Talks Telegram Founder’s Arrest

“The arrest of the president of Telegram on French soil took place as part of an ongoing judicial investigation,” Macron wrote. “It is in no way a political decision. It is up to the judges to rule on the matter.”

The founder of the messaging app was detained this past weekend in Paris on suspicion of using Telegram for illegal activities such as child pornography, drug trafficking, and terrorism.

Detractors of Durov’s imprisonment contend that France has gone too far in infringing upon free speech and anti-censorship principles, a point of particular concern for the blockchain industry.

Macron may have made his statement to disassociate himself from the contentious court ruling.
