After being arrested in France, Telegram founder Pavel Durov was transferred to a courtroom

On August 28, Pavel Durov, the creator and CEO of Telegram, was taken from the custody of the police and given over to a French court.

The Paris prosecutor’s office reportedly said that Durov would be subject to “initial questioning and possible indictment,” per the most recent CNN report. At Paris’s Bourget airport, he was taken into custody on August 24.

Lack of Moderation on Durov’s Telegram

Police think that more crimes have been committed on Telegram as a result of its lack of moderation. The billionaire arrived from Azerbaijan in a private jet, and the authorities apprehended him.

Per the report, the app has allegedly been used by far-right extremist and terrorist groups for their operations, and it has been “complicit in aiding fraudsters, drug traffickers and people spreading child pornography.”

In a social media statement, French President Emmanuel Macron claimed that Durov’s arrest was an apolitical move.

Macron stated, “As part of an ongoing judicial investigation, the president of Telegram was arrested on French soil.” “It is in no way a political decision. It is up to the judges to rule on the matter.”

Discussion over Freedom of Speech

Elon Musk declared that the investigation would violate people’s right to free speech and he was in favor of Durov.

“Check out this ad for the First Amendment. It is very convincing,” said Musk in a post.

A Russian internet censor claimed that the arrest and investigation were being carried out by the US government, which may have intentions to influence the price of TONs.

Yekaterina Mizulina, the head of the Safe Internet League (LBI), stated that the operation was conducted by French police “at the request of the United States.”

The price of the Telegram-related token Toncoin (TON) has dropped by 17.5% since Durov’s arrest and is currently trading at $5.5, according to CoinMarketCap. The trading volume has also surged by 44.9% over the past 24 hours.
